The word Bethlehem has several meanings, but one of the translations
says Bethlehem means "House of Bread". Here at Christ the King,
our Bethlehem Ministry is the name we give to our programs to assist
hungry families in the Upstate of South Carolina.
We actively support two programs in the area. One is our BackPack
Buddies program. This is modeled after other programs across the
country to address childhood hunger. The premise is that children
from food-insecure homes can obtain meals, primarily at
school during the week, but are susceptible to hunger on the
weekends. BackPack Buddy programs accept donations of
non-perishable food items as well as monetary donations and then
pack enough food in bags or backpacks so that these children can
have nourishing meals on the weekends.
First Presbyterian Food Pantry, Simpsonville:
The other program we are dedicated to is the food pantry at First Presbyterian
Church in Simpsonville, SC. Pastor Jim Caprell has been actively involved in
food pantry ministries for many years. Our Church Council decided to support
this important ministry, as resources for the hungry have declined in the past
