The Backpack Buddies program was started in 2011 by members of Christ the King Lutheran Church of Greenville. Over time, the ministry grew. "It Takes A Village" was formed by a few members of the church and others from the community to continue the program. All of the food and costs of office supplies, office equipment, Christmas toys, etc. have been provided by our volunteers, or one of our many corporate donors. Our program is incredibly grateful to all of the helping hands and hearts that have allowed this program to continue to meet the needs of children from food-insecure homes in Greenville County.
To reduce the effects of childhood hunger by providing nutritious, easy-to-prepare weekend meals for children residing in food-insecure homes in the Greenville area, and to provide backpacks, school supplies, and other items to ensure that the needs of the children in the program are met.
Who we serve:
We serve the neediest students at Paris Elementary School with enough food for seven meals each week. This year we are serving 22 students, making sure they have food, school supplies, and joyful Christmas and Easter holidays.
“These backpacks provide our students with a reason to smile every Friday. Meeting their basic needs helps them learn, grow and thrive at Paris. The BackPack Buddy program is truly a blessing and a source of care and comfort for our students who need a little extra love.”
Lori Nelson, School Counselor, Paris Elementary
